Do you find yourself wearing the same clothes over and over again, or frustrated when you cannot find something to wear in your closet? Here are brilliant tips to help you create order in this space, and get more use out of your clothes.
Tip #1: Take Inventory
This may seem like a “no brainer” but knowing what clothing you have that you still like, is in good shape, and is ready to be worn is important to know. Holding onto items that need repair, are worn or stained, or you are just tired of is only taking up space for more organization or newer items to freshen up your wardrobe.
I like to keep a small pad of paper in my closet (or better yet a note in my smart phone) where I keep a list of clothing items that I need as I think of them. If I realize that I need a brown belt, and do not have one, I write it down so that when I am shopping the next time I can pick one up. Or if your white t-shirts are all getting worn out, write it down and you will know what to look for the next time you are out.
Taking inventory of what you have and do not have is essential for getting your closet organized, and keeping you excited about wearing your clothes. It will also save you time and money for when you go shopping because you will be focused on filling the needs of your closet and not just pieces that catch your eye, and you end up never wearing or only wearing a few times.
Tip #2: Reverse Your Hangers
When you organize your closet, turn your hangers on the rod so that they are reversed and the hook is facing outward instead of back on the rack. Why? When you wear the clothing item and take it off the hanger, the next time you put it back in your closet you will put it on the rod correctly. In one year, look through what items in your closet you have not worn at all by checking which hangers are reversed on the rod. Evaluate why they were not worn, and discard items that you are ready to part with.
For folded items, you can fold them and place upside down or place a safety pin on the tag for easy spotting of items you are not using.
Tip #3: Choose Your Hangers Wisely
Visual order is more easily reached when you use hangers that are similar in size and shape. Discard the dry cleaner wire hangers because they only work to damage your clothes and misshape them. The plastic, felt, or wood hangers are your best choice.
Use the appropriate hanger type for the garment. You do not want clothing falling off hangers or being stretched from using the incorrect hanger type. Anti-slip hangers are a great choice for smoother fabrics and tank top or spaghetti strap tops.
Tip #4: Invest in Organization Tools
You may need drawer organizers to sort socks, undergarments, and accessories. A little investing will go a long way in saving you time from looking around trying to find something, and also allows you to get more use out of your clothes because you can see what you have.
If drawer space is minimal, invest in baskets or bins to fold t-shirts, workout clothes, or bulky seaters and sweatshirts. Use open wall space to hang belts, scarves, hats or handbags. Think of the best ways for you to easily see what you have, in a way that is easy to take out and put away.
Tip #5: Hang Empty Hangers on the End
When you remove the hanger, place it on the end of the rod or rack. Then when you are hanging clean clothes you are not hunting through your clothes each time to find empty hangers. It is a time saver, and keeps your closet looking even more organized.
Tip #6: Invest in a Step Stool
High places are hard to reach, making for items to get less use or not be put back in their correct place. Solve with problem easily by purchasing a stool to keep tucked away in your closet. There are many the fold up flat and can by easily stowed away until you need it.
Tip #7: Group Like Items
Organizing your clothing is a matter of preference. As long as it makes sense to you, then go for it at home moms. Some common ways to organize are by color, size, or clothing type. Then, when you are looking for a particular item, you will know just where to find it.
Tip #8: Proper Lighting
Depending on your closet and space, lighting may be minimal. Insufficient light will make it difficult to see your clothing properly and put it away neatly. There are many options for lighting that are easy to install and inexpensive. You can find stick on lights, that can adhere to the ceiling or walls and illuminate a dark space.
